Article Publication in AIChE Annual Meeting 2024 Conference Proceedings

Our partner, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, recently presented their work at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Annual Meeting 2024. The research, which is part of the LIGNICOAT project, focuses on the utilization of low molecular weight kraft lignin in bio-based alkyd resins for anti-corrosion coatings.

The study, presented in the conference proceedings, addresses aspects of using lignin fractions in alkyd resin production:

  1. Odor Characteristics: The team investigated the odors generated during alkyd resin synthesis using low molecular weight kraft lignin fractions.
  2. Thermal Degradation Profile: We have analyzed the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under realistic conditions of alkyd resin production.
  3. pH-Dependent Solubility: The study explored the solubility behavior of low molecular weight kraft lignin in aqueous solutions with varying pH levels.
  4. VOC Analysis: The production of odor-releasing sulfur compounds and lignin derivatives was examined using thermal desorption combined with gas chromatography.

This research provided insights into the feasibility and limitations of using low molecular weight kraft lignin fractions in the sustainable coating industry. By addressing challenges such as odor control and understanding the thermal degradation profile, the study paves the way for improved formulations of bio-based alkyd resins.

We congratulate our partners at VTT for their contribution.
