TECNALIA is the leading private and independent research and technology organization in Spain and one of the largest in EU, aiming to transform technology into GDP and generate business opportunities for industry. Through innovation and technological development, TEC contributes to the sectors of Energy, Environment, Industry, Transport, Construction, Health and ICT. TEC is the project coordinator of the LIGNICOAT project, having a great experience coordinating H2020 projects. TEC will be in charge of the coordination of all technical and non-technical activities of the project (WP7) as well as of ensuring the proper execution of the tasks and the achievement of the objectives. TEC will also lead the WP4 regarding the development and validation of the bio-based coatings. For this purpose, TEC will also be in close collaboration with WP leaders and task leaders of WP1, WP2 and WP3. In particular, TEC will be responsible for the development of LPOs process at lab scale and will also contribute to the development of lignin-based polycyclic carbonates for NIPUs and phosphorylated lignin derivatives for fireproof performance.
VIT is an independent research organization based in Belgium, that develops innovative processes and products for application in the sectors of chemistry, environment, materials, food and energy. The integration of state-of-the-art technologies into practical applications is enabled due to the highly skilled VIT’s employees. VIT has been involved in many industrial and co-financed projects, aiming for industrial implementation. Particularly, VIT’s experience in the depolymerization of lignin originated from wood for bio-based aromatics, will be of great importance during the LIGNICOAT project. VIT will lead the WP1 on lignin based intermediates and will be responsible for the depolymerization of lignin and the production of glycidylated lignin fractions. In addition, VIT will be closely collaborating with WP2 leader and task leaders on the lignin-based bio-resins.
VTT is a non-profit limited liability company and is one of the leading European RTOs focused on the areas of: Knowledge intensive products and services, Smart industry and energy systems, and Solutions for natural resources and environment (SONE). VTT aims to be a key player in the fields of bioeconomy and cleantech through strong international networking and by developing innovations for industrial ecosystems to support the utilization of natural resources . In LIGNICOAT project, VTT will be in charge of the activities related to the LigniOx process development for polyester-alkyd coatings, under WP1, which will be performed in VTT chemistry pilot platform. In addition, VTT will perform the characterization of the new material properties and lignin fractions produced in the LigniOx conversion process.
BARPIMO is a coatings manufacturing Spanish company specialised in wood and metal coatings that operates in more than 20 countries. BAR is mainly a developer and manufacturer of varnishes and paints for many sectors, such as the entire construction industry, the Furniture sector, the Automobile sector (excluding vehicle body paints), the Naval sector, the household Appliances sector and special applications. Moreover, BAR has been developing its own resin that has been used in the manufacture process and sold to distributors. In LIGNICOAT project, BAR will be the leader in WP2 Bio-resins based on lignin. BAR will be in charge of the specifications and the development of alkyd resins based on lignin polyacids and polyols. In addition, BAR will formulate bio-coatings with high bio-based content and corrosion and fire resistance for metal protection, under WP4 Bio-coatings formulation. Finally, BAR will collaborate closely with WP leaders in WP5, WP6 and WP7.
AEP Polymers is an italian SME focused on the applied R&D in the field of bio-based building blocks, polymers and formulations for industrial applications. Starting from renewable resources, such as plant-derived fatty acid oils, bio-aromatics and lignin, chemically modifying and formulating into high bio-content resins, AEP is coupling the material selection and the synthetic approach to produce materials for industrial applications. AEP has great expertise in funded projects and cooperations, having developed bio-based polyols, amines and bio-based thermosetting polymer formulations in lab scale for testing purposes and commercial exploitation. In LIGNICOAT project, AEP will be responsible for the scale-up and validation of lignin-based polyols designed by TEC. Furthermore, AEP will formulate epoxy lignin-based coatings for metal protection and their reactivity, processability and performance will be evaluated.
FORESA is a European chemical company with factories in Spain, Portugal and France. In 2019, FORESA TECHNOLOGIES was created by FORESA to value the company’s R&D. In FOR facilities, resin characterization analysis and tests on end products for formaldehyde emission, fire and moisture resistance take place. Additionally, FOR has been developing adhesives based on formaldehyde, vinyl acetate, natural products derived from lignin, soy, sugar, paraffin emulsions etc. Under the LIGNICOAT project, the main task of FOR will be, in WP3 Bio-additives, the development of encapsulation procedure for active compounds, with antiviral and antimicrobial properties. In particular, FOR will explore a new method of pickering emulsions. Finally, FOR will also contribute in WP4 Bio-coatings formulation, developing bio-coatings with antimicrobial and antiviral properties for wood surfaces.
ARDITEC is a French non-profit association promoting sustainable development, the protection of limited resources and the protection of socio-cultural heritage. By providing innovative solutions inspired by concepts, such as circular economy, life cycle thinking, socio-dynamics and others, ARD aims to contribute to the transition to an ecological and equitable economy, as well as, to the energy transition, including GHG emission reduction, energy consumption reduction and primary energy consumption of fossil fuels reduction. ARD will be WP5 leader, dealing with the environmental impact analysis, health and safety study, techno-economic and circular performance assessment regarding the innovations of LIGNICOAT project.
VENCOREX is a world leader of aliphatic isocyanates (HDI, IPDI) and their derivatives and a key supplier of TDI aromatic isocyanate. Particularly, specific VEN products can be used in high performance polyurethane coatings for automotive applications, railway, general industry, aerospace, plastic and wood, leather finishing, adhesives etc. Having 3 manufacturing sites (France, USA, Thailand), 2 labs (France, China) and a global commercial network, VEN’s main task in LIGNICOAT project will be to obtain a bio-based aliphatic isocyanate to be used with LPOs, under WP2 Bio-resins based on lignin. VEN will be examining the compatibility, appropriate rheology and reactivity with LPOs. Finally, VEN will also contribute in WP4 with the formulation and testing of the bio-coatings, examining flexibility, hardness, chemical resistance or hydrophobicity.

During the LIGNICOAT project, AXIA will design, develop and update the project website and will be responsible for the communication and dissemination activities, while leading WP6. Moreover, market analysis, business plans development, IPR management and patent mapping will be conducted and will be included in the continuous updates of the Plan for Dissemination and Exploitation of Results (PEDR). Additionally, the results will be used to develop training material, promote knowledge transfer activities, and assist on organization of relevant workshops.
Westlake has been involved in the global coatings and industrial markets offering the development, manufacturing and processing of thermostat resins and fiber reinforced materials based on epoxy resins, phenolic resins and hybrid binder systems. Offering advanced technologies, innovative, high-performance and sustainable chemistries, Westlake has already incorporated the use of renewable raw materials in formulations. The main task of Westlake in the LIGNICOAT project will be to scale-up the production of lignin intermediates and lignin-based epoxy resins, under WP2. In addition, Westlake will be involved in WP1 and WP4, defining the target specifications of the bio-based materials for lignin-based resins and contributing to the development of bio-coatings based on epoxy resins for metal applications, respectively.
IRIS Coatings, located in Italy, is a producer of intumescent and fireproofing reactive coatings, with applications in buildings, construction, train and shipbuilding industries. IRIS aims to become a specialist in fire protection, while maintaining a green commitment by incorporating waterborne high-performance coatings with extremely low VOC or completely halogen-free fireproofing products for environmentally safer products. IRIS will be in charge of the development of bio-coatings for fire protection of wood substrates, under WP4. At the same time, IRI’s contribution in WP2 will concern the requirements for resin development, including bio-additives that will be developed in WP3, for application of fire retardancy.
Located in Norway, NORCE is an non-profit organization performing research and innovation on Energy, Health, Climate, Environment, Society and Technology. NOR provides solutions that contribute to sustainable value creation at the local, national and global level. The main research interest focuses on safe society, sustainable energy production, climate change, sustainable oceans and aquaculture. NOR will lead the WP3 Bio-additives and is in charge of the formulation and proof of concept of the new enzymes for VOCs degradation. In addition, NOR will be involved in WP4 Bio-coatings formulation, performing antimicrobial and antiviral performance assessments for the different bio-coatings for wood and metal surfaces.
Ecoat is a French innovative SME that manufactures bio-based polymers for coatings. The bio-based resins for paints are non-toxic, with a negative carbon footprint, high quality and lower cost than existing products, addressing the sustainability and ecological needs of the coating industry. In LIGNICOAT project, ECO will be mainly involved in WP2 Bio-resins based on lignin, developing bio-based PUD from lignin polyols and bio-isocyanate. Under the same task, the improvement of fire reaction and antimicrobial performance of wood will take place. Additionally, ECO will collaborate with TEC on the NIPU route, by utilizing cyclic carbonate and bio-based diamines. Finally, ECO’s contribution in WP1 will include the specifications of bio-based materials for lignin-based resins.
ITACyL is a Spanish public entity that has been developing new technologies, conducting research in the fields of Agriculture, Livestock, Food industry and Bioeconomy, and transferring scientific advances. In LIGNICOAT project, the ITACyL Centre of Biofuels and Bio-products will be participating, promoting the bioeconomic and bioenergy sector. ITACyL task in WP3 includes the extraction and purification of different hop fractions (polyphenols, flavonoids, etc) into their components by utilizing green extraction techniques, and, at a later stage, the testing of the antimicrobial activity (antifungal and antibacterial) of the natural compounds. Following the detection of the most promising compounds, they will be included in coatings and tested under WP4 activities.
