LIGNICOAT Approach and Methodology

Objectives

LIGNICOAT aims to demonstrate technical and economic feasibility of the use of lignin as raw material to produce of bio-resins (PUD, alkyd, epoxy) for different applications in the field of functional, sustainable coatings. Several lignin intermediates (Polyols, Epoxies, phosphorylated, polyacids and carbonates) will be examined and their techno-economic and environmental benefits will be assessed.

Workplan

LIGNICOAT is a 42-month project and its goals will be achieved through the implementation of eight (8) WPs, including: 4 technical WPs (WP1-4), sustainability assessments (WP 5) and dissemination and exploitation of LIGNICOAT results (WP 6). Finally, WP 7 concerns project management and WP 8 ethics requirements.

Impact

Establishing a new cross-sectoral interconnection between the lignin supply chain and the industrial partners, while opening up new paths for lignin use in developing new bio-coatings. Investigating the feasibility of three new lignin-based bio-based chemicals, namely lignin polyols, lignin epoxies and lignin polyacids as well as three new bio-based materials PU resins, alkyd resins and epoxy resins.
