The LIGNICOAT project has recently been highlighted in an article by Industry Talks (Spanish industry-focuse news platform), showcasing our work in developing bio-based resins for industrial coatings using lignin. The feature, published on January 15, 2025, gives and overview of the project’s achievements and impact on sustainable industrial practices in coatings.
The article also includes from our Project Coordinator, Dr. Aitor Barrio, senior researcher at Tecnalia, whom shared the challenges and achievements that our team faced during the project implementation. In particular:
- The team overcame technical hurdles in using lignin as a raw material for bio-resins, employing innovative processes like lignin oxidation and ring-opening polymerization.
- These technologies have been validated at pilot scale in relevant industrial environments (TRL5), demonstrating their viability for large-scale applications.
- The use of lignin, an abundant and cheap by-product of the paper and agroforestry industry, reduced production costs compared to fossil-based alternatives.
Moreover, the LIGNICOAT project while making the coating industry advance towards a sustainable path. Dr. Barrio emphasized that adopting these sustainable coatings contributes to:
- Reducing CO₂ emissions
- Promoting circular economy
- Creating green jobs in Europe
- Enhancing Europe’s global competitiveness in green technologies
This article in Industry Talks is an important feature for the LIGNICOAT project’s contribution to widen its coverage and support sustainable industrial practices in the coating industry for developing lignin-based bio-resins.
