LIGNICOAT Concludes with Final Meeting at TECNALIA: Showcasing Innovative Bio-based Coatings

The LIGNICOAT consortium gathered at the TECNALIA premises in San Sebastian, Spain, for its final meeting, marking the 42nd month of the project. The two-day meeting began on November 19th with a visit to the TECNALIA facilities in Azpeitia.

The visit to TECNALIA’s facilities in Azpeitia showcased its comprehensive wood research capabilities, which cover everything from biomass processing and material characterization to advanced fire testing, bio-based product development, and certification procedures for various industries. Here the tasks related to fire-performance measurement of our bio-based PUD coatings, and antiviral and antimicrobial bio-based alkyd were developed.

In the afternoon, the meeting had presentations from WP7 on Management (TECNALIA) and WP6 on Dissemination and Exploitation (AXIA Innovation GmbH). While the WP7 presentation provided an overview of the deliverables, milestones, and steps needed to successfully conclude the project and to undertake for the final review report and meeting.

AXIA’s presentation on WP6 highlighted the project’s communication successes and strategic updates, including market analysis and IPR strategy. The focus was on revenue models for four innovative bio-based coatings:

  • Bio-based polyurethane dispersion with fire-resistance properties for wood substrates
  • Bio-based alkyd resin with anticorrosion properties for metal substrates
  • Bio-based epoxy resin for coil coating applications
  • Bio-based coating with bio-based additives with antimicrobial and antiviral properties for metal substrates and melamine boards.

On November 20th, the focus was on the technical part: the bio-based formulation and its assessment. IRIS, TECNALIA, BARPIMO, and AEP Polymers provided an overview of the final formulation and the performance achieved for the final applications. Following this, ARDITEC Association reviewed the environmental, social, and economic assessments of our lignin-based coatings, highlighting the project’s environmental and economic impacts.

Finally, the meeting concluded with a workshop on UN-SDGs, which was useful for evaluating the impact of our project on the sustainable development goals and will be used for the public deliverable D5.6 titled Full Integrated Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment & Contribution to UN SDGs and Green Deal Directive.

The consortium’s dedication and collaborative efforts drive the project towards its end, promising impactful biocoatings and sustainable materials advancements.
